Transferring a domain and how renewals work

Moving a domain to or from Hostilo, and what happens as expiry approaches.

Transferring a domain to us

  1. 1Unlock it at your current registrar and ask them for the auth code, sometimes called an EPP code.
  2. 2Start the transfer here. Search the domain and choose Transfer in, then paste the code.
  3. 3Approve the email the registry sends to the registered owner.

.co.za transfers are free and usually complete within minutes. .com and other gTLDs take up to five days and add a year to your registration.

Your DNS records come across with the domain, so nothing goes offline.

Renewals

Auto-renew is on by default. We attempt the renewal well before expiry and email you if the payment fails, with enough time to fix it.

If you turn auto-renew off, we still send reminders at 30, 14 and 3 days before expiry. We will not renew it silently and we will not let it lapse without telling you.

If a domain does expire

.co.za and most gTLDs go through the same stages:

  1. 1Expired — the domain stops working but you can still renew it normally.
  2. 2Redemption — roughly 30 days later. You can still get it back but the registry charges a recovery fee, which is considerably more than a renewal.
  3. 3Released — anyone can register it.

We cannot shorten or waive those stages. They belong to the registry.

Transferring a domain away

It is yours, so you can leave whenever you want. Ask us for the auth code and we will send it. We will not delay it, add a fee, or make you talk to someone about staying.

Still stuck?

Ask Hostiy in the corner. It can see your account, so it will give you the answer for your setup rather than the general one. Anything it cannot answer goes to a person.
